Boishakhi Mela 2010

History of Boishakhi (Bengali New Year Festival)

In the early nineties the convenor of the then organisation came up with the idea of celebrating Bengali New Year.  After some informal meetings with other community groups they decided to organise Boishakhi Mela.  Boishakh is the first month of Bengali calendar. It is a solar calendar. The first day of Boishakh generally corresponds to April 14.

The first Boishakhi Mela was organised in 1993 (it was year 1400 in Bengali calendar) at the premises of Burwood Girls' High School. This venue hosted the festival for the following 13 years while it grew exponentially. In 2006 the festival was relocated to Sydney Olympic park to accommodate the increased crowd and participants. What started like a picnic day with little entertainment has now grown to become one of the most significant community and cultural events in Sydney.

Turner Freeman are proud to be associated with this event and wish all in the Bengali community a happy new year.
