Asia Pacific Rule of Law Conference
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
26 - 28 January 2011
The World Justice Project will hold its second
major Asia Pacific regional conference in January.
Turner Freeman sees the participation in conferences such as this as a real opportunity for the firm to be involved in assisting and advocating for the development of fair, transparent, free and accessible legal systems to assist in improvement of individual prosperity.
The World Justice Project is a multinational, multidisciplinary initiative to
strengthen the rule of law worldwide. It does so by building a broad and diverse
global constituency to advance the rule of law as a foundation for thriving
communities.
Its mission is to lead a global, multidisciplinary effort to strengthen
the Rule of Law for the development of communities of opportunity and
equity.
The World Justice Project is based on two complementary premises: firstly, the rule of law is the foundation for communities of opportunity and
equity; and secondly, multidisciplinary collaboration is the most effective way to advance
the rule of law.
The World Justice Project working definition of the rule of law comprises
four universal principles:
- the government and its officials and agents are accountable under the
law;
- the laws are clear, publicised, stable and fair, and protect fundamental
rights, including the security of persons and property;
- the process by which the laws are enacted, administered and enforced is
accessible, fair and efficient; and
- the laws are upheld, and access to justice is provided, by competent,
independent, and ethical law enforcement officials, attorneys or
representatives, and judges who are of sufficient number, have adequate
resources, and reflect the makeup of the communities they serve.
